Grove Park Storybook Cottage

Historic Renovation Project

This 1920’s era European Fairytale-style Cottage with original rough stone detail on the facade and curved rooflines was a diamond in the rough just waiting to be restored.  After many decades of love and wear and tear, this home was in need of a total remodel.  The ACM Design team of architects and interior designers was hired and the first phase of renovations started in 2014.  The second phase started in 2015 and in 2018, the owners commissioned ACM Design once again to help design a master suite addition and overhaul of the outdoor living area. The renovation of this home was awarded the prestigious Griffin Award from The Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County in 2015.

Phase One: Historic Renovation of Existing Cottage

Phase one of this comprehensive, total house renovation and restoration focused on restoring the interior spaces to their original detail.  The kitchen was completely redone, as were the bathrooms to today’s modern standards, with reproduction fixtures and hardware to match or recreate period details. All the major systems of the home were also updated including a new roof, new windows, and new mechanicals. The exterior of the home was in need of a major cleaning up as decades of dirt and grim covered the facade.  The garden plan in phase one was simple, add color and texture using native plantings with proper scale for this home.  A major clearing out was need to clear a tremendous amount of overgrowth.

Phase Two: Master Suite Carriage House & Garden Addition

Master Suite:

After restoring the primary structure, the only thing that this jewel of a home needed to complete her transformation was the addition of a luxurious main level master suite. The confines of this urban site required a compact footprint for the master suite addition, which was carefully nestled alongside the original sun porch. The design commanded a skillful hand with scale and proportion, thoughtful introduction of natural light, and intricate interior finishes and details to crescendo this splendid master suite, complete with private dressing room. The bedroom itself is fitted with beautiful antique furnishings that are softened by sumptuous moss green bedding. A gilt and crystal chandelier glimmers from the vaulted ceiling.

Master Bath:

The soft color palette of the master bedroom flows into the well-appointed master bath, complete with dual sinks, linen storage, laundry, private water closet and access to the outdoor spa tub. Soft white cabinetry and quartz countertops offer a harmonious backdrop to the intricately detailed herringbone and floral mosaic floor, fashioned from Thassos, Ming Green, and Kay’s Green marbles. Polished nickel bath and lighting fixtures sparkle for a touch of opulence. Muted Calacatta gold marble clads the shower walls to complete the spa shower. The final touch is a bespoke stained glass window panel featuring a herringbone and floral motif that allows natural light to spill into the space while offering privacy.

Outdoor Living:

Inspired by courtyard gardens of Charleston and Savannah, the garden at this home offers a restful outdoor retreat in the heart of the Grove Park neighborhood in Asheville. Wood pergolas cover an outdoor raised patio that is visible and accessible from both the main living room and the master bedroom via a pair of double French doors. Colorful garden beds nestls alongside a flagstone patio to create al fresco dining just steps away from both the house and summer kitchens. Tucked into the corner of the garden, a pair of Adirondack chairs gather around a small stone fire pit to offer a view to the stars.
